Test Entry - Detail

Alpha Fetoprotein (Amniotic Fluid)

General
Clinical Use: Alpha Fetoprotein is an embryonic-specific protein synthesised by the fetal liver. It reaches the amniotic fluid via the fetal urine then diffuses across the amniotic membrane to the maternal blood. The level of AFP in amniotic fluid is increased in connection with fetal malformations, especially neural tube defects. Other conditions giving increased levels incluse spontaneous abortion, fetal distress or death, oligohydramnio, gastroschisis, Meckel's syndrome, sacrococcylgeal, teratoma and Turner's syndrome.
  Availability: Samples are tested Monday-Friday.
