Test Entry - Detail
Magnesium (Spot Urine)

General
Clinical Use: For the monitoring of kidney function, and the detection of renal impairment. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation in the body. Plasma magnesium comprises about 1% of the total body magnesium. The relationship between plasma and intracellular Mg is not clearly defined. Plasma Mg does not necessarily reflect total body stores. Symptoms of hypomagnesaemia are broad and non specific but relate to the role of Mg in ATP metabolism and neuromuscular transmission. Clinically most Mg depletion goes unrecognized. Mg can be lost be several routes including the urine.
