Test Entry - Detail

Nickel

General
Clinical Use: Nickel is an essential element commonly found in the environment. It is used as a pigment in glass, ceramics and fabric dye, used as a catalyst in petroleum refining and plastics and in the production of metal alloys, nickel cadmium batteries. Nickel allergies affect 10-15% of the population and can develop from occupational exposure or exposure to nickel containing jewellery or prostheses. Nickel carbonyl - Ni(CO)4 used in petroleum refining is extremely toxic and clinical concern is limited to potential exposure to this nickel compound which may cause rapid onset of pulmonary congestion and inability to oxygenate haemoglobin. Chronic toxic effects are hypersensitivity (dermatitis) and carcinogenesis (respiratory). Urine is the preferred specimen to monitor occupational exposure.
