Test Entry - Detail

Treponema pallidum PCR

General
Clinical Use: Diagnostic testing for early syphilis when a lesion is present (e.g. chancre of primary syphilis, condylomata lata of secondary syphilis) and adjunctive diagnostic testing for neurosyphilis.
Suitable specimens are swabs from a lesion and CSF from a patient with positive syphilis serology. PCR testing may also be performed on placenta and/or neonatal swabs when congenital syphilis is suspected, as well as amniotic fluid and products of conception.
CSF testing is only performed when serology is positive, except in very immunocompromised patients. Syphilis PCR should not be used for screening purposes; syphilis serology is recommended for screening.
Availability: Testing is performed Monday to Saturday, with results usually available within 48-72h of receipt by the testing lab.
