Faeces - MC+S


General
  Clinical Use: Investigation of bacterial causes of food poisoning, diarrhoea and gastroenteritis by culture. Front line investigation is performed by PCR ( See Enteric PCR in directory) but culture will be performed in the event of unresolved PCR results, select organisms that are PCR positive, formed stools and specimen types such as tissue which are unsuitable for PCR investigation.
Culture is only performed when specifically requested on the following organisms; Listeria, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus and Aeromonas as PCR is unavailable for these organisms.
  Availability: Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.

  Collection Instructions: Regional Services: SAF fixed portion of sample must be prepared and sent with original sample.
Indicate specimen type, any specific organism investigation required and any relevant clinical history on request form. Travel history and recent antibiotic treatment should also be stated.
