If purulent discharge surrounds the catheter, please collect a swab for culture.
Clean skin and 3-5cm of catheter with 70% alcohol and allow to dry. Withdraw catheter with sterile forceps and send tip at least 1cm deep to former skin surface in sterile container.
If delivery is delayed >1 hour, store sample chilled.
Indicate specimen type, any specific organism investigation required and any relevant clinical history on request form. |
