Arterial Blood Gas


General
  Clinical Use: Used to assess acid-base status, blood gases and electrolytes in arterial whole blood samples.
  Availability: Analysis of samples by laboratory staff is available at QEII, FSH and RPH.

Whole blood Potassium: 3.5 to 5.2 mmol/L

Whole blood Lactate: < 2.0 mmol/L
Ionised Calcium: 1.12 to 1.32mmol/L
Hb: 135 to 180 g/L (Male); 115 to 160g/L (Female)
MetHb: <1.5%
CarboxyHb: <6.0%

  Container: Blood Gas Syringe (SYRINGE),  
  Sample Type:
  Minimum Collection Volume: 300uL
  Collection Instructions: Collection of ABG sample is to be done by medical staff.


Processing Requirements
  Alternate Containers:
  Processing Instructions: After collection, the sample should be analysed immediately. If manually transported to the laboratory, sample should be kept chilled during transport.
Treat sample as irreplaceable.
  Minimum Assay Volume: 300uL
  Stability: 20 minutes ambient
  Transport Instructions (to testing laboratory): Deliver samples as soon as possible to the laboratory by hand. The pneumatic tube system is not recommended for transport of these samples as analytes may be affected.
