Test Entry - Detail

Beta-2 Microglobulin

General
Clinical Use: In normal individuals beta-2-microglobulin is found in both the serum and the urine. Serum levels of beta-2-microglobulin are a function of its rate of synthesis or it's rate of release into the circulation. Serum levels are frequently increased in inflammatory disorders (eg rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogrens Syndrome and Crohn's diease) and in lymphoproliferative diseases( eg. multiple myeloma, B cell lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia) In the lymphoproliferative diseases beta-2-microglobulin is often used as a measure of the tumour load. Serum levels are also elevated as a result of decreased clearance in renal insufficiency and are negatively correlated to creatinine clearance.
