Test Entry - Detail

Immunofixation Electrophoresis (Urine)

General
Clinical Use: Immunofixation electrophoresis is usually ordered when the protein electrophoresis test shows the presence of an abnormal protein band that requires typing or confirmation. Urine immunofixation is used to confirm the presence of Bence Jones Protein. Immunofixation electrophoresis consists of two distinct steps in the procedure; the first stage is high-resolution electrophoresis followed in the second stage by application of monospecific antisera to the surface of the gel to precipitate the antigen(s) of interest.
Routinely a detection screen is performed. A detection screen consists of Protein Electrophoresis of Serum (QEP) and/or Protein Electrophoresis of Urine (BJC or BJE). If an abnormal protein band or suspected abnormal band is seen in the QEP an Immunofixation is performed. If an Immunofixation is required quantitation of Immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM will be performed. Immunofixation routinely tests for alpha, gamma, mu, kappa and lambda chains. (D & E can be tested for if required).
