The need for referral of optical platelet count is determined by scientist at those sites where it is not available.

Availability:

Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.
This test may be eligible for Rule 3 exemption if indicated.

If sample will not reach laboratory within 48 hours of collection, please prepare and send a blood film for microscopy.
4ml and short draw 2 ml EDTA are acceptable as well as paediatric tubes for paediatric patients. 10ml and 6ml EDTA are not acceptable.
