Test Entry - Detail

B-Type Natriuretic Peptide

General
Clinical Use: The natriuretic peptide system includes atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type natriuretic peptide of myocardial cell origin and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) of endothelial cell origin. The cardiac natriuretic peptides promote natriuresis and diuresis, act as vasodilators, and exert antimitogenic effects on cardiovascular tissues. ANP and BNP are secreted by the heart in response to haemodynamic stress. Increased levels of BNP are produced mainly in response to left ventricular wall stretch and volume overload. Measurement of plasma BNP is used as an aid in the diagnosis and assessment of the severity of heart failure. Patient survival following myocardial infarction can be predicted with this test in conjunction with other known risk factors
Availability: Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.
  Aliases/Synonyms: BNP,   Brain Natriuretic Peptide,
  Code: BNP
Handling Instructions (to laboratory): Send separated sample chilled within 24 hours of collection or frozen on dry ice if transport will be delayed.
