Renal Biopsy (Histopathology)


General
  Clinical Use: For the diagnosis of a range of renal diseases, particularly glomerulopathies and follow-up for transplant patients.
There is a specific Renal Biopsy Protocol organised through the Renal Units at major hospitals. Enquiries regarding renal biopsies should be made firstly through the Renal Units. Renal Unit staff collaborate closely with pathology staff to ensure adequacy of biopsy sampling and to aid in correct subdivision of tissue for the various ancillary tests including Immunofluorescence and Electron Microscopy.
  Availability: Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.

  Collection Instructions: 1) Light Microscopy: Place specimen in 180ml blue-top specimen jar containing 10% Buffered Neutral Formalin. 2) Immunofluorescence: Specimen is placed in OCT medium and frozen in liquid nitrogen. 3) Electron Microscopy: Place specimen in 5ml yellow-top specimen jar containing 4% Glutaraldehyde.
