Test Entry - Detail

Digoxin

General
Clinical Use: To determine if the concentration of digoxin in the blood is at a therapeutic level or to detect toxic levels. It takes 7 to 8 days to reach steady state.
All digoxin requests on patients <=60 days will reflex to Free Digoxin. Total Digoxin will not be performed. This is because of the possible interference from Digoxin like immunoreactive factors on the Abbott digoxin assay.
Availability: Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.
  Aliases/Synonyms: Lanoxin,
  Code: DIG
Handling Instructions (to laboratory): Send sample chilled.

  Reference Interval:
Revised Therapeutic Range (6 hours post dose):
Heart failure patients in sinus rhythm: 0.5-0.9ug/L.

For ventricular rate control in chronic atrial fibrillation: <1.2ug/L

Heart failure patients in sinus rhythm show decreased mortality and hospitalisation when digoxin levels are in the range 0.5-0.9ug/L.

The risk of death in patients who are taking digoxin for ventricular rate control in chronic atrial fibrillation has been shown to be independently related to serum digoxin
concentration and was highest in patients with concentrations of 1.2ug/L or more.

Collection Requirements
  Container: Lithium Heparin-PST (GREEN),
