Electrolytes, Urea and Creatinine

General

Clinical Use:

Electrolyte measurements are used to screen for an electrolyte or pH imbalance and to monitor the effect of treatment on a known imbalance that is affecting bodily organ function. Since electrolytes are often abnormal in a variety of acute and chronic illnesses, they are frequently requested in hospitalised patients. Urea and creatinine levels are used to evaluate kidney function and to monitor patients with kidney failure or those receiving dialysis.
Test includes Sodium, Potassium, Bicarbonate, Urea and Creatinine. If Chloride or Anion Gap are required these must be requested separately.

Availability:

Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.
This test may be eligible for Rule 3 exemption if indicated.

Collection Instructions:

PST/SST tubes must be centrifuged within 4 hours of collection.
If a non-gel tube is collected, the plasma/serum must be transferred to an aliquot tube within 4 hours.
