Clinical Use:
|
Adjunctive diagnostic testing for brucellosis. Semi-quantitative IgM and IgG enzyme immunoassays (EIA) are performed. The assays detect antibodies to B. abortus, B. suis and B. melitensis. Values may be low or negative early in infection; acute and convalescent sera may be required to confirm recent infection by demonstrating a seroconversion or significant increase in value.
Culture of sterile fluids/tissues is also recommended for diagnosis of brucellosis (e.g. blood cultures, bone marrow, biopsy tissue). Contact a Clinical Microbiologist before submitting specimens for Brucella culture as these pose a risk to laboratory staff and require special handling. |
