Test Entry - Detail

CMV Qualitative PCR

General
Clinical Use: For detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in the lower respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, eye or central nervous system in immunocompromised patients (e.g. lower respiratory tract specimens, GI biopsies, CSF).
CMV PCR is also used for screening and diagnostic testing for congenital CMV infection in neonates under 3 weeks (urine, mouth swab). Testing can also be performed on amniotic fluid or products of conception.
CMV PCR is not routinely recommended for diagnosis of acute acquired or past CMV infection; CMV serology should be performed instead.
CMV DNA may be detected incidentally in urine or respiratory specimens from patients with latent CMV infection.
CMV qualitative PCR is not performed on blood. For diagnosis or monitoring of CMV in immunocompromised patients, CMV viral load is recommended.(See separate entry).
CMV PCR is not recommended on stool, even in immunocompromised patients, as false-positive and false-negative results are common. CMV PCR on endoscopic biopsy is recommended instead.
Availability: Testing is performed Monday to Saturday, with results usually available within 48-72h of receipt by the testing lab.
