Clinical Use:
|
Diagnostic testing for Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (formerly P. carinii). Lower respiratory tract specimens are preferred (e.g. induced sputum, BAL). An oral wash (or, in children, a nasopharyngeal aspirate) is acceptable when a lower respiratory tract specimen cannot be obtained.
To obtain an oral wash, the patient should rinse and gargle with 10mL of sterile saline for 30 seconds then spit the liquid into a yellow top pot. |
