Clinical Use:

Adjunctive diagnostic testing for flaviviruses, including Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Kunjin virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, Yellow fever virus. Serology is recommended as the primary diagnostic test for flavivirus infection. Flavivirus PCR testing on urine can aid in diagnosis.
See separate entry for flavivirus serology.
For diagnosis of flavivirus CNS infection, peripheral serology should be performed first; if peripheral serology is positive, antibody testing (serology) should be performed on CSF. PCR on CSF is less sensitive than antibody testing and will only be performed to confirm a positive antibody test or on special request.
When submitting specimens for flavivirus PCR, please specify the required flavivirus(es) on the request form. |
