Streptococcus pneumoniae PCR


General
  Clinical Use: Adjunctive diagnostic testing for invasive pneumococcal disease.
Suitable specimens are CSF, pleural fluid, EDTA blood. Culture is also recommended.
S. pneumoniae PCR is not performed on respiratory tract specimens (e.g. sputum, throat swab). Culture should be performed instead.
  Availability: Testing is performed Monday to Saturday, with results usually available within 48-72h of receipt by the testing lab.
