Clinical Use:
|
Silver (Ag) salts are used as antiseptic and bacteriostatic agents. Ingestion or inhalation of silver or Ag salts can cause argyria or argyrosis. In normal individuals silver slowly accumulates with age, but causes no apparent harm.
Clinical findings of argyria are (irreversible) discolourations of the skin, mucous membranes and nails, whereas argyrosis refers to ocular silver deposition.
Ag testing can be used to monitor patients under treatment with silver containing creams used for burns or occupational exposure (Jewellery).
