Test Entry - Detail

Human Herpes Virus 6 Serology

General
Clinical Use: Testing for IgG to human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6).
Most people are infected with HHV-6 by the age of two and have detectable IgG thereafter.
To investigate for reactivation in immunocompromised patients, HHV-6 PCR should be performed on blood and/or CSF.
Laboratory confirmation is rarely required in uncomplicated primary infection in children (roseola infantum); HHV-6 PCR on blood or CSF can be considered in complicated cases. IgM testing is of limited utility.
See separate entries for HHV-6 PCR.
