Test Entry - Detail

Factor V Leiden

General
Clinical Use: This assay is used to determine the Factor V Leiden gene status following a request for activated protein C resistance or Factor V Leiden.
Up to 90% of APCR is due to a single mutation of the Factor V gene (Factor V Leiden). The Factor V Leiden mutation has a prevalence of about 10% in the general population (9.5% heterozygous, 0.7% homozygous). It is the most common cause of inherited thrombophilia.
Patients heterozygous for the Factor V Leiden mutation have an 8-fold increased risk of venous thrombosis. This risk increases to 100 fold in a homozygous patient. Risks are further increased with the oral contraceptive pill.
Availability: Samples are batched and tested twice a week.
Aliases/Synonyms: Activated Protein C Resistance,   APC Resistance,   aPCR,   F5L,   FVL,
  Code: HFVL
Handling Instructions (to laboratory): Send sample chilled.
