Test Entry - Detail

Prealbumin

General
Clinical Use: Prealbumin/Transthyretin is an unglycosylated protein that transports the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and retinol. Prealbumin is synthesized in the liver and due to its short half-life of approximately 2 days; it can be used for monitoring the nutritional status and efficacy of parenteral nutrition (nutrition from outside of the gastrointestinal tract). Prealbumin is also a negative acute-phase reacting protein; consequently levels decrease rapidly in inflammatory states, despite adequate nutritional stores. Prealbumin/Transthyretin can also be associated with a form of amyloidosis. As amino acid substitutions in the transthyretin (TTR) gene leads to unstable, amyloidogenic TTR protein deposits in the body.
