Test Entry - Detail

Overnight Sleep Studies

General
Clinical Use: Human Growth Hormone is the principal regulator of body growth and has a number of direct metabolic and cellular effects in addition to acting indirectly by inducing the release of insulin like growth factors. Hyposecretion of hGH in children results in short stature and this can be corrected by administration of hGH. Hypersecretion of hGH, eg in a pituitary adenoma, causes gigantism in children or acromegaly in adults. Because of the episodic nature of hGH secretion, single serum measurements cannot be reliably used to diagnose disorders of hGH secretion. Instead, dynamic tests are used in which samples are collected over a period of time following suppression or stimulation of hGH secretion.
