Detection of Somatic Variants in the EGFR Gene

Clinical Use:
|
Aberrant signalling from the Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) transmembrane glycoprotein is known to be important in the development and progression of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). 10-15% NSCLCs have EGFR-activating mutations in exons 18, 19, 20, 21 and the presence of these variants is used to predict sensitivity to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) drugs e.g. gefitinib, erlotinib and afatinib.
This test also detects the presence of the EGFR T790M exon 20 resistance variant. (Please note that for analysis of EGFR T790M specifically in cell free DNA, please refer to the protocol for 'Detection of variants in cell free DNA' for collection information).
Patients that do not have EGFR mutations may have variants in other genes which are useful predictive biomarkers, e.g. KRAS mutations, ALK or ROS1 translocation.
Medicare rebate available for Non-small cell lung cancer with non-squamous histology or histology unspecified. |
