Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient


General

  Reference Interval:
Gradient >/=11g/L is suggestive of a transudate.  Possible causes include congestive 
cardiac failure or increased portal hypertension due to cirrhosis or intrahepatic metastases.

Gradient <11g/L is suggestive of an exudate.  Possible causes include pancreatitis, 
tuberculosis and peritoneal neoplasms. This may also be seen in the context of nephrotic syndrome.
