Test Entry - Detail

Legionella Serology

General
Clinical Use: Diagnostic serological testing for Legionella longbeachae and Legionella pneumophila. Total antibody testing for each species is performed by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFA) and reported as a titre. Titres may be low early in infection; acute and convalescent sera may be required to confirm recent infection by demonstrating a significant increase in IFA titre. Legionella pneumophila and Legionella longbeachae PCR testing of a lower respiratory tract specimen (e.g. sputum) is recommended for diagnosis of acute Legionella infection. Legionella pneumophila urinary antigen testing is also available and should be requested separately.
