Prenatal Group B Streptococcus Screening (Culture)


General
  Clinical Use: Routine antenatal screening for rectovaginal colonisation of Streptococcus agalactiae (also known as group B Streptococcus (GBS) at 35 - 37 weeks gestation in pregnant women via a combined lower vaginal and anorectal swab. Screening is to determine the risk of passing the bacteria to the newborn during birth, possibly resulting in a serious infection called early-onset GBS.
  Availability: Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.
