Intraosseous Bloods - Biochemistry

General

Clinical Use:

Intraosseous blood samples are obtained from the bone marrow cavity in critically ill patients when venous or arterial samples are unable to be obtained.

Availability:

Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.

Handling Instructions (to laboratory):

Send sample on ice slurry within 30 minutes of collection.

Reference Interval:

Intraosseous glucose, Na, urea, creatinine, lactate and pH are comparable to plasma/serum results

Collection Instructions:

Deliver sample to laboratory immediately following collection.
Collect sample prior to flush or fluid infusion.
DO NOT RUN SAMPLE ON BLOOD GAS MACHINE
Label sample as "Intraosseous".
Request "Urgent Intraosseous Glucose, Sodium, Urea, Creatinine (and Lactate/pH where available).
