Mpox PCR


General
  Clinical Use: Diagnostic testing for Mpox (formerly monkeypox) disease caused by the MPXV virus.

N.B. Mpox collections can only be performed at certain PathWest Collection Centres, by prior arrangement. Within the Perth metropolitan area, contact the Collection Centre Coordinator on 0487 060 582. Outside the metropolitan area, collection can be performed only at Broome Chinatown, Esperance the Esplanade, Geraldton Durlacher St, and Kalgoorlie Hannah St. Mpox collections are not performed at hospital-based Collection Centres. Note PathWest Collection Centre staff do not collect specimens from anogenital regions.

  Availability: Testing is performed daily, with results usually available within 24h of receipt by the testing lab.

  Handling Instructions (to laboratory): Specimens for Mpox testing should be double-bagged and the request form placed in the pocket of the outer biohazard bag. If lesion swab MC&S is required, collect separate swabs for MC&S and put them in the same biohazard bag as the swabs for Mpox PCR. Other specimens collected that are not for Mpox testing, e.g. bloods, should be placed in a separate bag.

  Container: Sterile PCR Container (STERIPCR),  
  Sample Type: Skin Swab Vesicle; Nasopharyngeal Swab; Tissue; Rectal Swab

Processing Requirements
  Alternate Containers:
  Processing Instructions: A new order should be placed for each swab collected and location of collection should be clearly defined (i.e. face, left hand, right foot = 3 orders)
  Minimum Assay Volume:
  Stability: 1 week chilled
  Transport Instructions (to testing laboratory): Send samples chilled.
Samples must be double-bagged (see Handling Instructions above).
Specimens for Mpox testing do not need a dedicated esky.
