| Clinical Use: | Diagnostic testing for Mpox (formerly monkeypox) disease caused by the MPXV virus. For further information, see the latest Mpox Clinician Alert from the WA Department of Health, contact your local Public Health Unit, or follow the hyperlink below. N.B. Mpox collections can only be performed at certain PathWest Collection Centres, by prior arrangement. Within the Perth metropolitan area, contact the Collection Centre Coordinator on 0487 060 582. Outside the metropolitan area, collection can be performed only at Broome Chinatown, Esperance the Esplanade, Geraldton Durlacher St, and Kalgoorlie Hannah St. Mpox collections are not performed at hospital-based Collection Centres. | Handling Instructions (to laboratory): | Specimens for Mpox testing should be double-bagged and the request form placed in the pocket of the outer biohazard bag. If lesion swab MC&S is required, collect separate swabs for MC&S and put them in the same biohazard bag as the swabs for Mpox PCR. Other specimens collected that are not for Mpox testing, e.g. bloods, should be placed in a separate bag. Send samples chilled. |
