Test Entry - Detail
HSV / VZV resistance testing

General
Clinical Use: Sequencing of the thymidine kinase (TK) gene of herpes simplex virus 1/2 or varicella zoster virus to identify mutations associated with resistance to aciclovir and related antivirals. Resistance testing may be considered when there is persistent HSV/VZV positivity despite appropriate treatment, or when there is active disease in an immunocompromised patient with prolonged prior exposure to antivirals.

Resistance testing is only performed after discussion with a Clinical Microbiologist and requires a specimen positive for HSV/VZV.
Availability: Testing is performed on request, with results usually available within 7 days of receipt by the testing lab.
