Avian influenza PCR


General
  Clinical Use: Identification of avian strains of influenza A that may cause human disease (e.g. influenza A/H5).
Transmission of these strains to humans has not been reported in Australia but may be seen in travellers returning from areas with reported transmission.
Routine testing for influenza A is expected to detect avian strains.
Any suspected human case of avian influenza must be reported to a Public Health Officer immediately. Contact a Clinical Microbiologist before submitting specimens for testing.
  Availability: Testing is performed on request, with results usually available within 24h of receipt by the testing lab.

  Processing Instructions: Additional precautions are required when handling specimens that may contain avian influenza. Contact the on-call Clinical Microbiologist prior to processing.
RPCFR may be performed in relevant regional labs to rule in/out influenza A. See MGP246 for definition of 'additional precautions'.
