Test Entry - Detail

HIV-1 / HIV-2 Qualitative NAT

General
Clinical Use: Confirmation of HIV infection in serology-reactive individuals by detection of HIV-1/HIV-2 RNA.
HIV serology remains the preferred test for screening and diagnosis of HIV-1/HIV-2 infection. In special circumstances, HIV-1/HIV-2 Qualitative NAT may be performed when HIV serology is non-reactive, e.g. following high-risk exposures. This should be discussed with a Clinical Microbiologist.
For investigation of children up to 18 months of age with perinatal HIV exposure, see 'HIV-1 Qualitative PCR'.
For HIV monitoring, see 'HIV Viral Load'.
