Biofire Meningitis/Encephalitis Multiplex PCR

Clinical Use:
|
Multiplex PCR assay for detection of central nervous system pathogens, comprising: K1 serotype E. coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, cytomegalovirus (CMV), enterovirus, herpes simplex virus 1, herpes simplex virus 2, human herpesvirus 6, human parechovirus, varicella zoster virus, Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii.
This assay will be performed on lumbar puncture CSF provided there is sufficient volume when:
1) Unspecified 'PCR/NAT' is requested;
2) Testing is requested for any of the above pathogens; or
3) CSF microscopy shows pleocytosis.

N.B. This assay is less sensitive than targeted testing. If infection with a particular pathogen is suspected but the Biofire is negative, contact the microbiology laboratory and ask for targeted testing for that pathogen.
