Dermatomycosis PCR


General
  Clinical Use: Dermatomycosis PCR is the primary test to detect common fungi causing superficial fungal infection (skin, hair, nails).
If fungal infection is strongly suspected and the molecular test does not detect the likely causative pathogen, contact the laboratory to arrange culture.
If Malassezia infection is suspected (e.g. tinea versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis), contact the laboratory to arrange microscopy.
Trichophyton indotineae will be detected as Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex or Trichophyton species - if T. indotineae is clinically suspected and PCR is positive, contact the laboratory to arrange culture.
  Availability: Samples are batched and tested once a week.
NB: Test not currently available within QEII Network, order Fungal Culture (Superficial) [CXSKS].

  Sample Type: Skin; Hair; Nails
  Minimum Collection Volume:
  Collection Instructions: Each requested site should have a separate collection (Left/Right & Back/Front samples can be collected together).
Record the use of any antifungal agents within the previous 48 hours and advise patient this may affect results.
Collect as much sample as possible.
Use parafilm to seal petri dishes.
