Diabetes autoantibodies


General
  Clinical Use: Assessment of antibodies to GAD-65, IA2 +/- Znt8 is used for: evaluation of suspected type 1 diabetes; predicting risk of developing diabetes among relatives of patients with type 1 diabetes; predicting risk of future need for insulin treatment in adult-onset diabetic patients; predicting future risk of diabetes in women with gestational diabetes.
Patients will first be tested for antibodies to GAD-65 and IA2. For patients with positive GAD-65 and/or IA2 antibodies, no further testing will be performed. In patients where "diabetes antibodies" has been requested, antibodies to ZnT8 will be performed if GAD-65 and IA2 antibodies are negative.
  Availability: GAD and IA2 are tested fortnightly.
ZnT8 is tested fortnightly on samples with negative GAD and IA2 antibodies.
