Test Entry - Detail

JC Virus Serology

General
Clinical Use: The "Stratify JCV" test is used for assessment and monitoring of patients on natalizumab and requires a special collection kit and request form.
Patients provided by their neurologist with the special collection kit and request form can attend a PathWest collection centre for collection. Without these, collection cannot be performed.
For further information, see the Australian Clinical Labs' Collection Manual. JC virus serology is not available in Australia and is not performed in other clinical scenarios.

Collection Requirements
  Container: Miscellaneous (MISC),
  Sample Type: Special Collection Kit
  Minimum Collection Volume:
Collection Instructions: For collection staff, only proceed if the patient brings the collection kit with two tubes, each with a 10-digit barcode. Collect blood into the barcode-labelled serum gel tube. See Processing Instructions for further instructions.
If Stratify JCV or JC Virus Serology is the only test requested and the patient hasn't brought the collection kit with barcode-labelled tubes, do not proceed with collection; refer the patient back to the requesting doctor with advice to check the PathWest Test Directory. If other tests are requested along with JC virus serology, collect specimens relevant for the other tests and add 'SEOTH' test, so that QEII serology can inform the requesting doctor that testing for JC virus serology cannot proceed.

Processing Requirements
  Alternate Containers:
Processing Instructions: If specimen reception receives samples for StratifyJCV or JC Virus Serology in the correct barcode-labelled tubes, process as follows: Leave specimen for 30-60 minutes at room temperature
Centrifuge at 1800-2000g for 10 minutes
Pipette all the serum into the barcode-labelled cryo tube & discard the primary collection tube
Store the cryo tube in the freezer (-20ºC)
Forward the frozen cryo tube to QEII CSRA who will arrange transport to ACL.
The correct request form is not essential, as long as the tubes are barcode-labelled.
If a specimen reception receives samples for StratifyJCV or JC virus serology NOT in the correct barcode-labelled tubes, add 'SEOTH' and forward to QEII serology.
