Corynebacterium diphtheriae MC+S


General
  Clinical Use: Screening for presence of toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae (also C. ulcerans, C. pseudotuberculosis), the cause of respiratory and cutaneous diphtheria.
The preferred specimens are a combined nasopharyngeal and throat swab AND swabs from skin/wound lesions (if present). Ensure C. diphtheriae MC&S or toxigenic Corynebacterium MC&S is clearly indicated on the request form.
  Availability: Samples are tested routinely during the testing laboratory's hours of operation.
Results are usually available within 2-5 days of receipt by the testing laboratory.

  Collection Instructions: Screening for toxigenic corynebacteria requires specialised culture media and is only performed at QEII & FSH labs.
