Test Entry - Detail

C-Peptide

General
Clinical Use: Measurement of C-peptide may be useful in providing a reliable index of insulin secretion in a variety of clinical conditions. It is especially useful in evaluating beta cell function in patients with insulin dependent diabetes. Due to high prevalence of endogenous anti- insulin antibodies C-peptide concentrations reflect the endogenous pancreatic insulin secretion more reliably in insulin treated diabetics than the levels of insulin itself. Measurement of C- peptide, insulin and glucose are used as an aid in the differential diagnosis of hypoglycemia. A suppressed level of C-Peptide during hypoglycaemia is a screening test for the exclusion of insulinoma. However, if hypoglycaemia follows surreptitious administration of insulin, C-Peptide is suppressed but insulin levels are raised.
