Test Entry - Detail

Caeruloplasmin

General
Clinical Use: Caerulplasmin is an alpha 2 serum glycoprotein produced by the liver. It is classed as an acute phase reactant produced with injured liver and in association with systemic illnesses (eg rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, bacterial infection, burns and MI). It can be increased in pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, aplastic anaemia, acute leukaemia and liver cirrhosis. Caeruloplasmin is primarily ordered along with blood and/or urine copper tests to help diagnose Wilson's diesease, an inherited disorder associated with decreased levels of caeruloplasmin and excess storage of copper in the liver, brain, and other organs. Rarely, it may be ordered to help diagnose or differentiate between conditions associated with copper deficiencies.
