Carnitine (Free and Total)


General
  Clinical Use: Measurement of free and total carnitine may assist in the diagnosis of inherited metablic disorders, particularly those of the fatty acid oxidation pathway.
  Availability: Samples are tested Monday-Friday.

  Handling Instructions (to laboratory): Send whole sample chilled within 2 hours of collection.
Send separated sample frozen on dry ice.

Collection Requirements
  Container: Lithium Heparin-PST (GREEN),  
  Sample Type: See container
  Minimum Collection Volume: 0.5mL
  Collection Instructions: If sample will not reach laboratory within 2 hours of collection, it must be centrifuged, separated and frozen.


Processing Requirements
  Alternate Containers:
Serum Sep. Tube-SST (GOLD)
  Processing Instructions: Centrifuge, separate and freeze sample.
Check with BGU before adding this test to a previously collected sample.
  Minimum Assay Volume:
  Stability: 2 hours chilled; 3 months frozen
  Transport Instructions (to testing laboratory): Send separated sample frozen on dry ice.
