Vitamin E

General
Clinical Use: Vitamin E is found in vegetable oils, fresh leafy vegetables, egg yolk, legumes, peanuts and margarine.Vitamin E is absorbed in the presence of bile and from the small intestine. Vitamin E functions as an antioxidant preventing peroxidation of unsaturated lipids particularly in erythrocyte membranes. Vitamin E has preventive roles in retrolental fibroplasia, intraventricular haemorrhage, and mortality of small premature infants. Decreased serum levels of vitamin E have been reported in patients with grand mal seizures and in persons exposed to nonsymptomatic doses of organophosphates. Conditions resulting in fat malabsorption, such as cystic fibrosis, can lead to vitamin E deficiency. Excessive vitamin E leads to malabsorption of other fat soluable vitamins (particularly D and K). Symptoms of vitamin E deficiency (<9 umol/L) include: irritability, oedema, haemolytic anaemia. While in general relatively high doses of tocopherol are tolerated, overdose may lead to: malaise, intestinal distress, defective coagulation, ecchymoses.
