Test Entry - Detail

Follicle Stimulating Hormone

General
Clinical Use: Human Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)is secreted by the gonadotroph cells in the pituitary. Ovarian steroids, principally estrogens, modulate the secretion of LH and FSH which in turn regulate the menstrual cycle in females. FSH promotes follicular development in the ovary and gametogenesis in the testes. It is secreted in a pulsatile manner and is under negative feedback from the gonads. Circulating FSH levels vary throughout the menstrual cycle in resposne to estradiol and progesterone. Elevated concentrations of FSH are indicative of gonadal failure when accompanied by low concentrations of the gonadal steroids. Abnormal FSH may also indicate dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.
