Test Entry - Detail

LH

General
Clinical Use: LH and FSH are secreted by the gonadotroph cells in the pituitary in response to the secretion of the gonadotrophin releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. Ovarian steroids, prinipally estrogens modulate the secretion of LH and FSH which in turn regulate the menstrual cycle in females. When the follicle and ovum reach maturity, a surge in LH causes the follicle to rupture and the ovum to be released. Determination of LH is essential for the prediction of ovulation, in the evaluation of infertility and the diagnosis of pituitary and gonadal disorders. In males LH stimulates the production of testosterone by the Leydig cells in the testes.
