Glucagon


General
  Clinical Use: Glucagon is a polypeptide hormone secreted by the islet alpha-cells in the pancreas; it stimulats the production of glucose in the liver and the oxidation of fatty acids. Glucagon secretion is stimulated by low levels of plasma glucose, with resultant increases in blood glucose concentration.
  Availability: Samples are batched and tested once a week.

  Container: VIP/Glucagon (VIP/GLUC),  
  Sample Type: See container
  Minimum Collection Volume: 4mL
  Collection Instructions: Refer to Duty Biochemist prior to collection of sample.
Patient must be fasting.
Special collection tube is available from QEII CSRA.
Sample must be centrifuged, separated and frozen immediately following collection.

  Minimum Assay Volume: 1mL
  Stability: 30 minutes chilled
  Transport Instructions (to testing laboratory): Send separated sample frozen on dry ice.
