Test Entry - Detail

Lupus Anticoagulant Screen

General
Clinical Use: Lupus anticoagulants (LA) are autoantibodies directed against negatively charged phospholipids or complexes of phospholipids with either beta-2 glycoprotein 1 or clotting factors such as prothrombin. They occur in various clinical conditions especially autoimmune diseases and are associated in vivo with a tendency to thrombosis. LA are generally detected in phospholipid dependent clotting tests, (ie prolonged aPTT) but are not corrected by mixing studies with normal plasma. Prolonged clotting times due to a LA need to be distinguished from idiopathic antibodies against FVIII which are associated with bleeding.
If patient is anticoagulated with a Direct Oral Anticoagulant (DOAC), a DOAC Stop test panel may be requested in addition to the Lupus anticoagulant to remove interference. (See DSLUP for additional information).
