Test Entry - Detail

SHBG

General
Clinical Use: SHBG is synthesised in the liver and in the circulation it's biological function is the transport of sex-steroid hormones. It has a high binding affinity for testosterone and 5-dihydro-testosterone and lower affinity for 17beta-oestradiol. Approximately 44% of testosterone in normal adult males is bound to SHBG. In healthy women, the corresponding figure is about 66%, reaching 95% in late pregnancy. The relationship between the circulating concentrations of SHBG and testosterone is important in the evaluation of possible androgen excess in women who have hirsutism, acne or virilization, which may originate from excessive adrenal (eg Cushing's Syndrome) or ovarian (eg Polycyctic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)or ovarian tumour) androgen production.
