Measles Serology

General

Clinical Use:

Diagnostic and immunity testing for measles. Measles IgG testing is performed on all requests. Measles IgM testing is performed if specifically requested or history suggests acute measles infection. Specimens reactive on the measles IgM enzyme immunoassay (EIA) will have supplementary testing performed by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFA). Presence of measles IgG suggests immunity to measles from past infection or vaccination but may be detectable during acute infection. For diagnosis of acute measles, a throat swab, urine, and EDTA blood should be submitted for measles PCR testing in additional to serology.

When acute measles is suspected in a patient in the community, the WA Communicable Disease Control Directorate should be notified in order to optimise the public health response. When acute measles is suspected in a hospital patient, the on-call Clinical Microbiologist should be informed immediately in order to optimise the infection control response.
