Syphilis Serology

General
Clinical Use: Screening and diagnostic testing for syphilis (Treponema pallidum).
Specimens are screened with Treponema pallidum total antibody immunoassay. Specimens reactive on the screening test will have rapid plasma reagin (RPR) testing performed.
New positives will be confirmed by a second treponemal assay: Treponema pallidum haemagglutination (TPHA).
For neonatal specimens, syphilis IgM and RPR will be prioritised. FTA-ABS testing is not available at PathWest.
For CSF specimens refer to Syphilis Serology (CSF).
