Test Entry - Detail

Chromogranin A

General
Clinical Use: Chromogranin A is an acidic protein that is co-released with catecholamines from storage granules in the adrenal medulla. It is secreted by a great variety of peptide-producing endocrine neoplasms: pheochromocytoma, parathyroid adenoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma, carcinoids, oat-cell lung cancer, pancreatic islet-cell tumours, and aortic-body tumour. Non-tumour associated increases may occur with proton-pump inhibitor use, gastritis, impaired renal and liver function, inflammatory bowel disease, glucocorticoid therapy and high titres of rheumatoid factor.
Availability: Samples are batched and tested once a week.
  Aliases/Synonyms: CgA,   Cgn,
  Code: CGA
Handling Instructions (to laboratory): Send separated sample frozen on dry ice.

  Reference Interval:
Chromogranin A: <102 ug/L

In most patients treated with PPI a two to four-fold increase in CgA is found. The increase in CgA seems to be related to the dosage and duration of PPI treatment. A more than ten-fold increase in CgA levels has occassionally been reported. One to two weeks after discontinuation of PPI the CgA levels return to normal.
